Bendict - Baptist Protestant

Once again, we are observing how the old Baptist historians - in this case David Benedict - could think about the Baptists being described as Protestants without choking on his tea.

This is because the old Baptists so described themselves. We have already seen how the framers of the 1678 Baptist Confession did so and then later on how explicit the 1689 men were.  Later on, John Gano and Isaac Backus and the 20 Baptist churches that made up the Warren Baptist Association in New England certainly didn't hesitate to refer to the Baptists as a "separate Protestant denomination." Leading Baptist historian, JT Christian didn't bat an eyelid when he quoted Froude describing the Baptists as the "most thorough of the Protestant sects" while fellow Baptist champion CH Spurgeon trusted that he was the "most ardent Protestant of any man living." It probably never crossed Benedict (or any of the great historians) to challenge this. To be fair, JT Christian did on another occasion to that quoted above express some qualms about it.  He said something about the link being "only technical" but still [i] technical or not - they are still technically Protestants and [ii] compare the almost apologetic comment with the rabid hands in the air horrors of some - I think the substantive point still stands. I will, of course, keep you informed as more comes to light.
